Dermatology
Skin conditions are very common in our pets and Uxbridge Animal Hospital offers a variety of dermatology services to help diagnose and manage these conditions. According to a study conducted by Nationwide, one of the largest pet insurers in the country, skin allergy was the most common medical condition prompting veterinary visits for dogs and within the top ten for cats. In dogs, this was followed closely by ear infections, skin masses, and skin infections.
Common allergies in both dogs and cats include flea bite allergies (causing a condition known as flea allergy dermatitis), food allergies, and environmental allergies (known as atopic dermatitis). Common environmental allergies in our area include dust mites, grasses, molds, weeds, and tree pollens. At Uxbridge Animal Hospital, we utilize a number of diagnostic tools to help identify the cause of your pet's skin ailment and work with you to form an individualized treatment plan for your pet. To help diagnose allergies, we offer serum allergy testing, prescription diets for food allergy trials, and effective products for flea control. We have a new microscope to evaluate skin samples to help diagnose potential skin infections or mites, as well as help identify various skin masses. We perform skin biopsy procedures when needed in the diagnosis of more serious conditions such as auto-immune diseases and offer surgical mass removal as well. Our main goal after identifying the problem is to keep your pet comfortable!
